Lucille Ball
Lucille Ball was a well respected and adored American actress and comedian from the late 1920s till the end of her life in 1989. Although Ball was recognized for her happy-go-lucky character in her most popular sitcom, I Love Lucy, during the 1930s she became involved in the growing scandal of the United States known as The Red Scare. In 1936 and 1938, Ball registered as a member of the Communist Party, which at the time, had no significant negative connotation associated with being a member. However once the Red Scare came about, Ball was called before the House Committee on Un-American Activity counts. Ball denied any true allegiance to the Communist Party, claiming that her reason for registering in the first place was to please her grandfather. Lucille Ball, after being tried, was cleared of any official suspicion. Although she was able to escape the raging McCarthyism, the Red Scare nearly ruined her successful career, which would not only have effected her husband, Desi Arnaz, but the entire population of the United States.
