The Red Scare although having taken place in the 1950s still has its effects on the entire nation to this day. By the height of the Red Scare, the United States was attempting to appear as anti-communist as possible in an attempt to set an example of the ideal democratic country. The U.S. made the pledge of allegiance to the flag include the words "one nation under God" during this time period, some saw it as a way of including the predominately protestant religion that the country has but in reality when looking at the time period they included this in, it is very easily seen as making attempt to show how anti-communist the nation was due to the non-religious beliefs of the USSR. In fact Karl Marx himself said "religion is the opium of the people" meaning that religion was almost like a sickness that ultimately leads to the demise of nations and people, it is people's greatest weakness. To this day there is paranoia in the nation, mostly in the older generations, that there will be an attempt at a Russian take over. Russia today in American movies is seen as a very gothic country and is almost always among the enemies in films. Today there is no high tensions with Russia but it is still a well known fact that a war with Russia would mean nuclear war threats once again between two world powers. |
